Shift Your Perspective: Why the Back Window Matters

Writer: Hadley SchaferHadley Schafer

You know that saying that goes, there is a reason the windshield is as big as it is and the rearview mirror is so small?

I'm going to say something controversial, I don't like that saying. The windshield is big because yes, everything that is in front of you, your horizon and open road and opportunity and exits and all the things are HUGE. But you know what else is big?? Your back window. Because everything back there is big too. It is where you started, it is the turn you may have missed, the person who let you in and over.

The mirror doesn't have anything to do with it and you shouldn't hide from where you started.

The pain you experienced from being hurt, physically or emotionally...that was real. The joy you felt, that thing you accomplished...that happened.

Now, I understand the metaphor, don't dwell on the past. Yada yada yada, but sometimes your past is still your present. Be okay with being present. Feel the feels. And know, it will pass. It really will. Enjoy the highs, and know, it will pass. It also, really will.

I once told my yoga teacher that I didn't want to give up the emotions of happiness and sadness to live a life of contentment. Those emotions were my physical reaction to the reality that surrounded me. And you know what? I lived through it. I came out on the other side.

And finally, I was able to look at the perspective from that back window too and smile.

Car mirror reflects a clear road and green trees under a cloudy sky. Interior of car visible, with a blurred background and calm mood.
The perspective of looking back while going forward.
